Down Middlewood Lane by Darren O'Brien (Collated Observations 15)
Collated Observations is a series of regular photozines showcasing aspects of modern life through the lens of a different UK-based photographer each issue.
Issue 15 features the work of Sheffield based documentary and editorial photographer Darren O’Brien. Darren’s work has appeared in the national press such as The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, The Financial Times and The Sunday Mirror along with four photobooks including ‘Sharrow Vale and the Antiques Quarter’ (2019 History Press) and ‘Anywhere but Home’ (2016 Brown Owl Press).
"Sheffield is shaped by industry, it dominates the landscape and the built environments. The city’s layout is heavily influenced by the industry of the 19th and 20th century with parts of the city centre dating back back further. In fact under the Castlegate area, which is currently under development, is buried the site of the forge which is often regarded as the birthplace of the industrial revolution.
'Down Middlewood Lane' is a photographic journey exploring the socio-economic impact of Sheffield’s post industrial landscape through the fictional area of Middlewood Lane. The scars of Sheffield’s industrial past not only run through the landscape, but also through the social makeup of the city. Creating a fictional place allows me to explore different areas without isolating any single part."
