Postcards from the Promenade by Ben Hodgson (Collated Observations 05)
Collated Observations is a series of regular photozines showcasing aspects of twenty-first century Britain through the lens of a different photographer each issue.
For volume 05 we welcome someone who doesn’t really consider themselves 'a photographer' despite having an obvious gift for the medium. Ben Hodgson is a fanatical vinyl collector, with an Instagram feed @soulbrother73 split evenly between shots of his latest wax acquisitions and random photographs taken about his daily life. This is his first published body of work, produced specifically for the Collated Observations series.
"These images were all taken at either end of an 8 mile stretch of the glorious North-East coastline, just a few minutes drive from my front door. Roker, Seaburn and South Shields were once seaside resorts of choice for local residents and day-trippers from further afield – my Dad and his family would come though on the bus from their County Durham pit village if my Grandad was working ‘backshift’ at the Pit (and the weather was ‘set fair’). Whilst that time and that lifestyle may no longer exist and the places themselves may have lost some of their lustre, they remain an integral focal point for the local area. Recent events have only served to reinforce this notion, with many being drawn to the beaches and promenades to spend their limited leisure time ‘down the coast’. "
