Collated Observations is a series of regular photozines showcasing aspects of modern life through the lens of a different UK-based photographer each issue.
Our final issue for 2020 features work by Hector Malcolm, an amateur photographer from the Outer Hebrides in Scotland.
Hector first picked up a camera during an Erasmus exchange in Sweden, and after graduating in Sustainable Development from University of the Highlands and Islands, decided to combine his passion for film photography with his love for mountaineering.
Analogue Heights captures the awesome beauty of Scotland’s most dominating topographic feature – mountains. Using a pre-loved film camera, found in his papa’s attic, Hector hiked through the Western Highlands and through the hills of his native Hebrides to find a slower, more purposeful, more respectful way to take in the natural beauty of these giants.
“In 1987, renowned hillwalker and author, Ralph Storer published the book “100 Best Routes on Scottish Mountains”, which would go on to become the bible of Scottish hillwalking, being the go to guidebook for novice and experienced mountaineers all over. Storer simply recommends his 100 most unforgettable routes, but the book now stands as something more important. In an age where many outdoor enthusiasts scale these heights simply to tick off their Munro Bagging checklist, or scale Ben Nevis for the sake of status… Storer’s book represents a more sustainable and more interesting way of enjoying the great outdoors.
Analogue Heights is about reconnecting with this slower, more purposeful act of personal expedition. As is mirrored with the method of photography. The 24 shots on a single roll of film, calls for more time, thought and patience. The mountains have their own personalities, their own stories. The more time I took to appreciate them, the more pleased I was with the images.”
